Absolutely stunning scenery. I love it up there. Very quiet and you can see forever it seems. Beautiful view of downtown Chattanooga.
I've visited Point Park many times since arriving in Chattanooga, it has to be one of the best views over the city. The rangers are friendly and their talks offer a great introduction to the areas civil war history. Also on some of the public holidays they put on a display of a civil war cannon being fired (I believe it was Memorial day when I saw it). Yes, there is an entrance fee of $5, but if that puts you off it's worth looking out for dates when national park entry is free to all.
Incredible "must see" location. Park in the parking lot for free so you don't pay street parking. The views are incredible and thehistory is amazing. Spend at least a few hours to fully understand and read the information. Plan on it being 10 degrees cooler than in the town.
There is free parking if the lot isn't full. Immediately past the entrance (A big, castle-like gate) there is a left into the parking lot and past the restrooms. If this is full, there is cheap paid parking all around.
The view is beautiful. You can see all of Chattanooga, and there are many plaques and statues with history to read. I would imagine the most time one would want to spend here is an hour, but it's worth the trip.
Paid $3 to park and $5/person (honor system) to enter. I felt that was a little high for what was a simple park with a handful of monuments, but then again all parks need our help and I probably would have donated that anyway. I was also surprised they prohibit picnicking - it would be a great place to enjoy a snack. The perimeter walkway wasn't entirely fenced, which contributed to the amazing views but made it a little more precarious with two toddlers. Otherwise, it's an attractive park with interesting Civil War monuments and worth a visit, if only for the views.
Things to know before you go:
The "no nudity" sign in the restroom surprised me. Is this something that you normally need to tell people?
If you have an America The Beautiful National Park Pass, entry is completely free. Otherwise, it's $5 per person.
